Inside these pages lie tales of mischief, courage, and wit, brought to life with vibrant detail from England's storytelling heritage. A clever boy trades his family’s only cow for a handful of magic beans, only to find himself climbing a beanstalk that reaches the sky. At the top, he faces a towering giant, sneaks into a castle filled with wonders, and returns home with golden riches that transform his life. Yet, the boy’s appetite for adventure pulls him back up the beanstalk, where each climb holds new perils and treasures as he outwits the giant’s wrath time and again.
In another story, a poor woodcutter happens upon an enchanted forest where a mysterious figure grants him three wishes. But as he returns home, his thoughtless wishes lead to a series of ridiculous mishaps, until he’s left with only a supper of black pudding. And in a tale of magical song, a slain child’s spirit returns as a white bird, singing a haunting tune that captivates everyone who hears it. As it travels, this mystical bird reveals a tale of treachery and grief, gathering items as it goes until it finally delivers a just end to the guilty.
Elsewhere, an eager boy secretly reads from his master’s forbidden book and, without fully understanding the ancient words, summons a fiery demon. Desperate to escape, he tries to order the demon to do menial tasks, but his lack of control leads to an endless flood that nearly drowns him. Just as the waters are about to claim the boy, his master returns, saving him with the exact words to banish the creature. Each tale in this collection immerses readers in lively storytelling, whether through thrilling adventure, humorous missteps, or eerie mysteries that linger long after the final page.
