A Farmer’s Tale

Arven Stead wasn't a wizard. He was just a farmer with a few spells. But sometimes that was all you had. Even when the world was falling into chaos. Unfortunately his own world was also falling into chaos. His lover had deserted him – abandoned him for the blacksmith's son. No one had any respect for him – but then they'd never really had much. And even at his local spell house people mocked him. Though that was mostly Lysel De Alleon the spell merchant. But then the faen crossed the southern border returning the bodies of several score barbarians who had invaded their realm, and he knew that his troubles were small. The drum beats of war were sounding loud, and already he could hear the wyverns being saddled up, ready to fly. Meanwhile the people of Highfields were descending into some sort of poppy milk swilling madness. Declaring war on magic itself! What they needed he knew, before everything fell apart and the wyverns roasted them all, was a true wizard. But what they had was a farmer!
